Macro sample 60

The maize kernels in this sample were found in the lowest zones of the deposit and were originally thought to be Early Valdivia in age. Direct dating of the samples shows that they must have been intrusive and migrated down into the lower layers from the later occupations near the surface (Zarillo et al. 2008). Even so, this is one of the earliest directly dated maize macroremains in South America.
