Micro sample 486

Maize pollen grains were identified in 10 out of 22 coprolite samples (likely human samples) dating to the Gavilanes 3 phase (Numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 36, 40, 50, and 76). The samples had significant amounts of maize pollen which the authors suggest is indicative of an increased dependence on maize during this phase (Weir and Bonavia 1985:106, see Table 2 on p.130). The carbon sample used for this date, and associated with the coprolites from this phase was recovered from Pit 24, and consisted of charcoal mixed with other materials that had accumulated in the pit (Bonavia 1982: 74).
