Payne (31MR15)

This site is located approximately 66 km SSE of Greensboro on terrace adjacent to Deep River. It was excavated by Joseph Mountjoy in 1973, 1974, and 1985. It consists of occupational midden debris and house remains as part of an ancient village site. During the 1985 excavations, researchers discovered a series of subsurface pits, the two deepest of which "measured 55 cm and 56 cm in diameter, respectively, and were almost entirely filled with carbonized corn cobs," and which are interpreted to have been hide smoking pits (Mountjoy 1989:15).
